Chakras – Their
Meaning, Significance and Gemstones
Chakra refer to the seven power points of life force in the human
body that circulates energy. The meaning of the word 'Chakra' is 'wheel of
light' or ‘spinning wheel of energy’ in Sanskrit. These seven important
centres of energy are vertically aligned in the centre of the body close to the
spine. Chakras function like valves which regulate the flow of energy through
our energy system. A proper balance in the Chakras is essential for good health.
If there is any blockage or imbalance in the Chakras it can result in diseases
and poor health. Details of the seven Chakras are given below. Along with
details of each of the Chakras is also its location, significance, colour,
relevant gemstone, and how each Chakra impacts on our health.
Base
or Root Chakra - The 1st Chakra – Stone Red Jasper
The colour for the Base or Root
Chakra is red or black, and it is grounded with your power. When this Chakra is
open, you feel in good health and connected with your physical body. It
grounds your essence into your physical body. The Base/Root Chakra is located at
the base of the spine and groin, and is associated with adrenals, kidneys,
muscles and blood. Its Energy Focus is on stability, grounding, physical energy,
will, and security. This Chakra is said to be the seat of our procreation,
survival and base instincts. It is associated with the colours red or black and
it is grounded with your power. The red gemstones associated with this Chakra
are Red Jasper, Red Tourmaline, Garnet, Red Carnelian, Red Coral, Red Onyx, and
Ruby. The black gemstones are Black Tourmaline, Smoky/Clear/Rutilated Quartz, Hematite, Obsidian, and Black Onyx. Red stones are projecting stones which
assists in destroy disease, strengthens conscious, courage, strength, physical

essence into your physical body, provide determination, and helps in survival in

We have chosen Red Jasper to represent the 1st Chakra as it has been
used as a stone of protection for thousands of years. Part of the reason is its
ability to create and help balance aggressive, dynamic energy. Its spiritual
values are those found in ancient female warriors providing a perfect balance
between beauty and bold, confident power. A power you can feel when you wear it.
Red Jasper’s projective nature is used to protect and guard. It sends
negativity back to its source, and is also gently stimulating. Red Jasper
rectifies unjust situations and grounds energy, while assisting bringing
problems to light and providing insights into difficult situations.An excellent “worry bead”, Red Jasper calms the emotions, aids in
dream recall, and cleans and stabilises the aura.
This Chakra is located at the
genitals and is associated with reproductive organs and stomach. This is the
Chakra that monitors sexuality and reproduction. Its Energy Focus is on:
creativity, healing, sexuality and reproduction, desire, emotion, intuition. The
colour associated with this Chakra is Orange. Orange stones are said to govern
the genitalia, womb and sacrum. In this aspect, they are said to increase
energy, dispel inhibitions and repression, and ease kidney trouble. Carnelian is
the gemstone we have used to represent this Chakra and is used for these
benefits: it gives energy, protects from bad vibrations, guards against poverty,
helps give a sense of humour, and calms the temper. It brings personal power and
invokes joy, laughter and warmth as it opens the heart. Carnelian installs a
feeling of well being and inflowing power. Some diseases and conditions
associated with the Sacral Chakra are uterine fibroids, pre-menstrual syndrome,
irregular periods, ovarian cysts, irritable bowel syndrome, endometriosis,
testicular disease, low back pain and prostate disease. A balanced and healthy
Sacral Chakra can make one sociable, independent, constructive, energetic and
enthusiastic. Whereas an imbalance in this Chakra can make one withdrawn,

of sexual desire.
This Chakra is known as the power

with the liver, pancreas, gall bladder, spleen, digestive system and nervous
system. The colour associated with this Chakra is yellow. Yellow is very good
for getting in touch with your power and to build confidence. Yellow stones are
considered projecting stones and are used to destroy disease, strengthen
conscious, courage, strength, physical energy, luck, and success. The gemstones
associated with this Chakra are Yellow Jasper, Citrine, Golden Calcite, and
Amber. Some diseases and conditions associated with the Solar Plexus Chakra are
diabetes, liver disease and gall stones. When healthy, this Chakra brings us
energy, effectiveness, spontaneity, and non-dominating power. A balanced and
healthy Solar Plexus Chakra can make one confident, humorous, practical,
intellectual, alert and optimistic. Whereas an imbalance in this Chakra can make
one sarcastic, pessimistic and suffering from inferiority complex; and
experience, shame, anger, fear, bitterness, resentment, prejudice, and hate.
Along with all of the properties associated with Jasper, Yellow Jasper has
characteristics of helping one be strong and balanced in the social environments
and protect social and financial welfare. Yellow Jasper is a protective stone
that particularly gives protection during travel, both physical and spiritual.
It also shields one from negativity, and can protect from depression.
The 4th Chakra is located at the heart. This
is the higher consciousness and love Chakra. Its Energy Focus is on love,
compassion, universal consciousness, and emotional balance.It is located near the centre of the breastbone, or sternum, and is
associated with the heart, thymus gland, lungs and circulatory system. The
colours associated with the Heart Chakra are pink and green. Stones of these
colours are healing crystals used for matters of the heart, such as heartbreak,
jealousy, forgiveness, and compassion. Gemstones associated with this Chakra are
green aventurine, rose quartz, rhodonite, and peridot. These gems are used to
treat the nervous system, heart problems, blood disorders etc.Radiating a claming energy, Aventurine is used in shielding the heart,
and in healing and balancing the emotions releasing emotional stress. Green
Aventurine balances the male and female energies improving creativity and

further stimulates creativity and independence. It enhances leadership qualities

associated with this Chakra are heart diseases, allergies, problems related to
the immune system; and experiencing emotional instability, sorrow and loss. A
balanced and healthy Heart Chakra can make one compassionate, generous,

imbalance in this Chakra can make one jealous, miserable, bitter and

The 5th Chakra is located at the throat. This
is the Chakra for creativity, self-expression and the search for truth. Its
