How To Care For
Your New 925 Sterling Silver Gemstone Jewellery
You might be thinking because the silver in your jewellery is not as
shiny and bright as the day you bought it, there is something wrong with the quality of the silver, or even worse, that it is fake silver?! Please
be rest assured that this is not the case.
There are many reasons why silver turns yellow - and eventually black - which has nothing to do with the quality of the silver, but more the air we breath and the conditions in which we store our silver jewellery. When sterling silver is exposed to the oxygen in the air over a period of time, it becomes oxidised and eventually tarnished
(yellow) to varying degrees. Other reasons for tarnishing can be humidity, naturally emitted
sulphur, chemicals in clothing, food (onion, egg, oil based products, salt, milk, vinegar, acidic foods), wool, felt, rubber based products (rubber bands), latex, skin oils and
perspiration, makeup, perfume and hair products (gel, hair spray, hair
colour), wood, and more.
By now you are probably thinking why anyone in their right mind would ever buy silver jewellery? In many cases you would be right. These would be the people who have boxes of badly tarnished jewellery which they no longer wear,
shoved in backs of cupboards collecting dust. This doesn't have to be the case though. With a few simple actions on your part, you will never have to worry about your beautiful jewellery tarnishing.
Here we will look at some methods of creating an anti-tarnish, or tarnish resistant, storage environment for your new jewellery. These methods are all safe and do not emit fumes, gases or vapours.
OUR SEVEN TIPS TO
CONQUER TARNISH
1. Small Zip-Lock Plastic Bags (Each of our jewellery items come in its own free
individual zip-lock bag.)
Don't throw away the small zip-lock plastic bag your sterling silver gemstone jewellery arrives in. Not only do these stop your jewellery pieces from scratching each other while being stored, but also
keeps a lot of air away from the jewellery to retard tarnishing.
2. Tinted Airtight Container
I use, and recommend, a tinted airtight container to hold all my little zip-lock bags with the single pieces of sterling silver jewellery inside. They are very cheaply bought from any discount shop, and if you want to go one step further, buy one which
vacuum seals. The less air and light your silver is exposed to when you aren't wearing it, the less tarnished it will become.
Each time you take your sterling silver jewellery off, gently wipe it with a quality, jewellery sized Anti-Tarnish Polishing Cloth, like the excellent
one we offer on our website. This is impregnated with special treatments and chemicals targeted at the chemical makeup of sterling silver. It is important to get an Anti-Tarnish Polishing Cloth that is sized for the job it will be doing. Generally, what you need to look for is a cloth which is perfectly square (or rectangular) with stitching
that is neat, having no threads hanging off. Another feature is often referred to as “pinked or sheared”. This refers to the edges of cloth being specially cut so pieces of the cloth
won't catch on jewellery, unravel, or hang off. The 80x80mm
jewellery sized, Anti-Tarnish Polishing Cloth we offer on our website is a perfect square with pinked (sheared) edges. This cloth will last you for ages if you keep it in
the plastic zip lock bag provided between uses, and never wash it. Needless-to-say, don't use rubber gloves while polishing your silver, as it will cause tarnish. If you want to wear gloves, you are
best to have a pair of cotton gloves handy to wear while using your polishing cloth. These are very cheap to buy at any supermarket. You will find them in the same section that sells rubber gloves.
These magical squares absorb the sulphuric gases which cause tarnish. It is important to note that they DON'T remove tarnish, but stop the tarnish from happening while the tarnish free jewellery is being stored. These paper squares contain activated charcoal which absorbs the tarnish causing gases. Do NOT place your jewellery directly onto them, but put them in the airtight container you keep your sterling silver jewellery in their
individual zip-lock plastic bags. If you only placed one in a draw containing your
sterling silver jewellery they can last for about six months each, but if you keep them in an airtight container which contains your sterling silver jewellery in their
individual zip-lock plastic bags, they can last more than twice as long. 3M Anti-Tarnish Squares can be used in any draw containing silver items (flatware and cooking/serving items) and are affective in a 30 cubic inch area.
5. Silica Gel Granules Sachets/Cubes
These are those little sachets that come inside vitamin bottles, leather items, etc to absorb
moisture and are usually just thrown away with the packaging. Now you have a perfect reason to keep them, and they have cost you nothing.
Because they absorb moisture in the air, they also retard tarnish. Lack of movement can cause a moist
environment, so keep one in your sterling silver jewellery container to avoid moisture
build-up. To stop them absorbing moisture before you need to use them again, I
recommend keeping them in a separate airtight container (don't throw out that empty glass
vitamin bottle next time), or zip-lock plastic bag, to store all these little Silica Gel Granules Sachets/Cubes for future use, and
store it in a cool dark place. These are a must in humid climates and can last for months. I even use them inside plastic wrapped Himalayan Salt Lamps when I am storing them for any period of time. These little Silica Gel Granules are fabulous to use with any item which absorbs, or is ruined by, moisture.
6. Chalk
If you are someone who never buys items containing Silica Gel Granules Sachets/Cubes, raid your
child's toy box for a piece of chalk. Chalk has wonderful moisture
absorption qualities. Just pop a small piece in your airtight silver jewellery container and it will work for months controlling moisture and humidity.
7. Don't Store Your Sterling Silver Jewellery With Other Jewellery
Even keeping your sterling silver jewellery in the same draw as gold, stainless steel, or costume jewellery, etc can cause it to tarnish. Sterling silver loves to be kept with sterling silver. It is a love affair you should
respect.
If you follow these simple tips, you will be able to enjoy your sterling silver gemstone jewellery for many
years to come with very little maintenance from you.
Let's
cut through all the 'science' and look at this simply.
None of us intend to get a degree as a mineralogist, we
just want to see why this information is important for us
to know.
Firstly
a bit of background... Mohs' Scale
of mineral hardness was created by the German mineralogist
Friedrich Mohs in 1822 to measure the relative hardness,
or more actually the scratch resistance, of various
gemstones. This Scale has been used ever since by jewellers
- and jewellery lovers - throughout the world. Moh based
his Scale on ten readily available gemstones at the time,
and put Diamonds at the top of the Scale giving it a
rating of 10. He then went about to measure the hardness of a
gemstone that can scratch another, or the softest gemstone
that can scratch another.
Keep in mind that Mohs goal was only to measure what can scratch
what, or what can be scratched by what. This is
very important for us to know, as we don't want to inadvertently
damage our beautiful gemstones!
As
Mohs' Scale is a purely ordinal scale, it only
characterises the hardness of various gemstones through the
ability of a harder material to scratch a softer one. It
says nothing about the actual hardness of any of
them.For
example, on Mohs' Scale he gives Corundum a rating of 9,
but Corundum is actually twice as hard as Topaz - which
Moh gives an 8, and Diamond is really almost four times as
hard as Corundum. Again, Mohs' Scale doesn't table the
actual hardness of a stone - just its 'scratchability'.
Mohs'
Scale is perfect to include here in the 'care' section of
our webpage. We don't want you to kill your beautiful new
gemstone jewellery by attacking your softer gemstones -
like Lapis Lazuli, or Pearls, etc - with abrasive cleaners
when you clean the silver. You can clearly see on Mohs'
Scale that you will be more likely to damage these
gemstones, than you would a Diamond. I am not saying that
you will, but you might, and who wants to take that
gamble.
The
internet is full of 'Do-It-Yourself' harsh silver cleaning
methods, using all sorts of things found around the
average home. Please BEWARE! I have heard too often
from upset customers, who have cruelly scrubbed their
silver jewellery with the best intentions of wanting it to
retain its brilliant beauty, only to damage their
gemstones which were helplessly in the line of fire, and
leave scratch marks all over the silver. This
really isn't necessary. All you have to do is follow a
very simply care routine –
which I will provide - when storing your jewellery.
Also, when you take your silver jewellery off at the end
of each day, gently wipe the silver with a quality
jewellery sized Anti-Tarnish
Silver Polishing Cloth - carefully avoiding the softer
gemstones - before safely storing it back in its own
zip-lock bag. If you do want to polish some of the softer
stones, nothing beats a small piece of silk with crimped
edges, so no fibres will get caught in your jewellery.
Also, keep one of our 3M
Anti-Tarnish Squares in the same container you store
your silver jewellery to retard tarnish. You
will never have to use any 'heavy duty' cleaning methods,
if you put your Care Plan into affect as soon as you
purchase your jewellery.

reason we have included Mohs' Scale, was to show clearly
that not all gemstones are as tough as each other. Please
use this guide to help you understand the gentle spirit of
some of the gemstones in your jewellery.
Out of interest,
here are a couple examples of common things for
comparison, and how they would fit on Mohs' Scale:
the average fingernail would have a rating of 2;
a copper penny a rating of about 3;
the blade of a knife is about 5;
common window glass 5.5;
and a steel file is 6.5.
Below
we have listed some of the gemstones we have in our range,
together with some obvious examples for comparison, as
they appear in Mohs original scale of 'scratchability'.

Caring
for the gemstones in your sterling silver jewellery
Actual physical cleaning of the softer gemstones in your
jewellery should just be limited to dusting, and you can't beat a
small piece of silk with pinked (sheared) edges to help
stop threads catching in your settings. Buying an eyeglasses cleaning cloth to reserve only for your jewellery, is another good alternative.
Make sure these are kept as grit free as possible to avoid
scratching. A vigorous shake before and after use should
do the trick. Get into the habit of doing this every time
you take off your jewellery, after giving the silver a
wipe with your Anti-Tarnish
Polishing Cloth. If for any reason you need to wash one, use distilled water to avoid getting calcium deposits on your gemstones. Strong or abrasive cleaners need to be
avoided at all costs. Many gemstones may not be affected by these, but
a lot are very sensitive to them, and by the time you can notice the difference, it will already be too late.
If you plan on regularly wearing your beloved new piece of gemstone jewellery, it’s important to properly care for it to extend its life and beauty. Unfortunately, our favourite jewellery pieces are often the ones that have the shortest lives due to constant wear. So
DON'T wear it to the beach, as sweat, sunscreen and sand are a bad combination of elements for a gemstone.
DON'T where it while doing housework as washing dishes and doing the laundry exposes your gemstones and settings to a number of harsh chemicals that can alter their beauty.
DON'T wear your new jewellery while swimming as the chemicals that purify pool water are just as bad for your gemstone jewellery as household cleaners.
DON'T wear it while preparing to go out, as perfume, hairspray, lotion and even shampoo and conditioner have the potential to ruin gemstones over time. Make a habit of putting your jewellery on after you are completely ready, and you will never have to worry.
DON'T wear it to the gym. Jewellery has little place in a gym anyway, but it’s worth mentioning that the sweat, grime and potential for impact during a workout is bad for gemstones, especially the softer ones, and doesn't do the settings much good either.
DON'T use Ultrasound Jewellery Cleaning Machines. These machines can do a lot of damage to gemstones and their settings, and should be avoided at all costs. Though the hard gemstones are likely to fare well, the majority will not – and it’s better to be safe than sorry, especially with beautiful jewellery.
How
crystal gemstones work - scientifically &
metaphysically
Each crystal gemstone has its own meaning, energy and vibration.
Crystal gemstones, like all matter, are composed of tiny particles called atoms. When looked at closely, science tells us that these atoms (which are basic units of energy) are really subtle vibrations. Therefore, energy and matter are both the same - vibrations.

Bringing
your crystal gemstones to life - metaphysically
I have read many different methods of cleansing and caring for gemstones and crystals. This can lead to a great amount of confusion, especially when you wear yours as jewellery, and want the safest method which will enliven your gemstones, as well as keep them safely in their setting.
For the person who is only interested in gemstones and crystals as beautiful pieces of jewellery, their main interest is keeping it clean and prolonging its life.
For the person who would also like their gemstone to work for them in a metaphysical and healing manner, ‘cleansing’ their gemstones takes on an entirely different meaning.
Personally, I recommend the jewellery lover also 'cleanse' their jewellery. Why not? There are many things in life that we don't understand. Most of us don't know our 'atoms' from our 'particles', and quite frankly don't care one way or the other. To care for your
crystal gemstones doesn't mean that you will turn the
wearer into a deep personality moving over to the 'Dark Side'. That couldn't be further from the truth. We wash our dishes in a dishwasher, but we know there is 'muck' lurking about in places we can't see, so occasionally we run a cleanser through it to ensure our dishes remain sparkling, and everything works as designed. We don't understand how it works, but we know the result is healthy.
When it comes to metaphysically caring for
crystal gemstones basic processes are commonly written about, and all come together to achieve one final purpose. Here we will briefly touch on the simplest and safest methods for your jewellery, while looking at those processes.
Discharging
When crystals come in direct contact with our body they become statically charged. After holding them for a few minutes they become quite warm to the touch. This can be undone by simply holding the stone under running water and releasing the charge. ALWAYS make sure your crystals and gemstones are completely dry afterwards so your locket or setting will not become tarnished or damaged.
Cleansing
Crystals and gemstones attract, magnify and hold energy. We want to cleanse them of any unwanted energy. Energetically cleansing crystals removes any negative energy that the stone may have picked up, and returns the crystal to its pure state.
The information a stone has received will remain stored even after a stone has been discharged, and it will recharge itself again. Another action is required to clear the old information.
One of the recommended methods is to use salt, most particularly Himalayan Salt due to its
purity (supplied as our gift with your order). If you choose to use a salt solution, be very careful. Chemical reactions with some crystals will result in the stone losing its polished finish, and I have even had them change colour. Putting an opal into a salt bath will kill it, and can transform it into chalcedony because it will extract the water held in the opal (it takes a while, but will happen). While chalcedony is also a healing stone, it is just not the opal you may have started with. I have recently replaced an opal with crystal in a ring I had not worn for years. The beautiful colour of the original opal had completely vanished.
It is possible to achieve cleansing using salt in a safer manner. Place the crystal you wish to cleanse in a small glass bowl and set that on salt held in a larger glass bowl over night. The cleansing process is still in tact, but the stone itself (or the setting) won't become damaged from direct contact.
We have provided a small bag of pure Himalayan Salt as a gift from us with your purchase. This way, you will be able to safely cleanse your jewellery as soon as it arrives. You will come to sense when it will need to be cleansed again. Sometimes the stones visibly look dark and mucky or they may feel dull, heavy, and cloudy. Take time to observe your stones before and after you have cleansed them, see if you notice a brightness, or sparkle, once they have been cleansed both visually and energetically.
Charging
The amount of intensity that will come from a crystal directly relates to what it has absorbed. Its healing effect can be increased and strengthened through charging. I have found the best effects result from laying the stone in sunlight at either sunrise or sunset. If you can look into the sun without damaging your eyes, then it is in an optimum charging range. This is the time that sunlight has its best charging qualities. During midday the sun energies are discharging. It will suck the colour right out of amethyst, fluorite and many other stones. If it hurts my eyes to look at it, I certainly won't subject my crystal to it.
You can use the light of both the moon and sun to charge your crystals. I also like to place my stones out under the full moon and leave them over night into the next day to charge with both moonlight - feminine energy - and sunlight - masculine energy.
