Russell
H Conwell
(1843-1925)
Pioneer Motivational Speaker
In the year 1843 a man was born who was to have a profound effect on the lives of millions of people.
His name was Russell Herman Conwell. Russell Conwell raised several million dollars with which he founded Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, today one of the country's leading schools.
He raised the money by giving more than 6,000 lectures all over the country. And in each one of them he told the story “Acres of Diamonds.”
It was a true story which had effected him very deeply and it had the same effect on his audiences. The money he needed to build the college came pouring in.
Russell got is message across to people by telling
stories, so we thought that we would do the same and
introduce you to Russell Conwell via a story that changed
his life.
Russell Conwell's Story
His
journey started after an incident in the American Civil War. Russell Conwell made a vow. He promised that he would work sixteen hours a day: eight for himself and eight for John Ring. John Ring was a little man with a big heart. He was so small that the army would not take him. Although deeply Christian, he admired Russell, who was an atheist, and
travelled with the army as Russell's servant. Russell did not think he needed Christ and did not want a servant; but he was kindly man, who knew how much it meant to Ring to be part of the army. Russell's men had bought him a sword. John polished it every day.
During a confederate raid, John Ring was severely burned because he went back to save the sword.
John Ring died. His Christianity and courage led Russell to become a Christian. After the war, he hung the sword over his bed as a reminder of his vow. He became a conscientious and prosperous lawyer who refused to lie for any defendant.
But practicing law did not satisfy him. One day the lawyer spoke with a small church group who believed that their crumbling building must be sold. Russell offered to help them repair it. The people cheered up
and promised to help. The next morning Russell showed up to
work - and no one else did. So he set to work alone. Passers-by mocked him, but he won them over with his vision. Two even promised money. When the congregation found out that Russell meant what he said, they pitched in and raised the new church. Taking a huge pay cut, Russell became their minister. He made them promise, however, that they would double his salary when he doubled the membership. Within five months he had his raise.
Next he accepted an invitation to help a struggling church in Philadelphia. The Conwell "magic" worked again and his new church also prospered. By 1893 he was pastoring the biggest Baptist congregation in the United States. He founded Temple College, now Temple University, in 1888, funded almost entirely through the modest gifts of Philadelphia Baptists.

At one time, Russell Conwell's name brought to mind the famous peace and prosperity sermon, "Acres of Diamonds," which he delivered over 6,000
times as part of his public speaking engagements around the
world. It was published and reprinted many times in book form. Russell told the story of a
man who left home to search for diamonds, not realising that there were diamonds in the clay of his own back yard.
"Similarly, most of us overlook opportunities right in our own
backyards." said Russell.
He pointed out that greatness does not consist of holding some office that one might get in the future. It consists of "doing great deeds with little means and the accomplishment of vast purposes from the private ranks of life." Although neither Christ nor Paul nor the apostles were rich, Russell assured his listeners that
"Money is power, and you ought to be reasonably ambitious to have it. You ought because you can do more good with it than you could without it. . . If you can honestly attain unto riches, it is your Christian and godly duty to do so."
His practical advice was to find out what our neighbours need and meet that need. He pointed out that most millionaires became rich in small towns. "The men and women sitting here. . . have within their reach 'acres of diamonds,' opportunities to get largely wealthy."
he said.
The audio and e-book package we offer here contains

P T Barnum's Story
Phineas Taylor Barnum (P T Barnum as he is more commonly known) was born in Bethel, Connecticut on July 5, 1810.
His father was an inn-keeper, and from a very early age Barnum was observant, listened keenly and displayed an unusual ease with the customers, and a flair for entertaining and promoting.
As a very young boy he was also fully aware of the value of money and whatever he did, he always did with all his might. He was never known to squander money and by the time he was six years old he had saved enough coppers to exchange for a silver dollar. This he then "turned" into profit by selling home-made molasses candy, gingerbread, and at times a species of liquor made by himself which he called “cherry rum”.
By the time he was almost 12, he had accumulated enough money to buy a sheep and a calf and open a small store. He was a shrewd manager, and in his business, made money when he could.
He heard about tickets and lotteries and he saw that people would readily pay for a ticket, even if they did not really expect anything other than a slim chance to win, or to get some form of excitement and entertainment.
Barnum's first major success was the introduction of General Tom Thumb in 1842. In just a couple of years the two had journeyed through Europe on a
travelling tour.
He became a celebrated American showman by employing sensational forms of presentation and publicity to
popularise such amusements as the public museum, the musical concert, and the three-ring circus.
Most people would not realise but Barnum’s ultimate affiliation with the circus did not begin until 1870.
He was then 60 years old. With age as no barrier to
success, P T Barnum's Grand Travelling Circus grossed $400,000 in its first year.
P T Barnum single handedly made famous the popular circus saying "The Greatest Show on Earth”.
It was a full 17 years later that he formed a partnership with James A. Bailey. Two years after forming the Barnum and Bailey Circus, they took their show to England.
P T Barnum was aged 78 by this time.
Barnum was a great believer in the power of advertising and had natural genius in this field. No man knew better than he, the value of printer's ink. He made it part of his business to be talked about. The more attention he got in that way, the happier he was.
He even weathered accusations of fraud with the attitude that “there was no such thing as bad press”. He knew that 'the people' meant crowds, paying crowds; that crowds loved the fashion and would follow it; and that the business of the ‘great’ man is to make and control the fashion. With a great energy, which was one of his chief traits,
he became one of the richest men in America.
In his book, “The Art of Money Getting”, PT Barnum shares his personal philosophy for money, his advertising brilliance and the secrets for his wealth.
P T Barnum died on April 7 1891 in his sleep.
On April 8th London Times wrote -
”Barnum is gone. At the age of eighty, after a life of restless energy and incessant publicity, the great showman has lain down to rest. He gave, in the eyes of the seekers after amusement, a lustre to America.”
