One draws to himself thought waves corresponding in character with the nature of the prevailing thoughts in his own mind - his mental attitude. Then again he begins to set in motion the great Law of Attraction, whereby he draws to him others likely to help him, and is, in turn, attracted to others who can aid him.

William
Walker Atkinson
(1862-1932)
Prolific New Thought Writer
William Walker Atkinson was a prolific writer who is well known for his books on the power of the mind and using it to achieve success. Though his books were written in the early years of the twentieth century, they are still popular
to this day.
Without
doubt, one of my favourite of William Atkinson's books is
Thought Vibration OR Law Of Attraction In The Thought
World. You will find the first chapter of this fascinating
book featured on Tina's
Free Your Thought Vibrations Video page.
I became acquainted with the books of William Walker Atkinson many years ago, and have learned a great deal from them.
I like his books for their practical approach, clear instructions and for their inspiration and motivation. His language is simple, well understood and to the point. I have read his books many times,
and with each reading new truths were revealed which were not perceived in the previous reading.
William Walker Atkinson was a very important and influential figure in the early days of the New Thought Movement. Little is known about his early years, except that he was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on December 5, 1862, to William and Emma Atkinson, both of whom were
also born in Maryland.
He married Margaret Foster Black of Beverley, New Jersey, in October 1889 and they had two children. He pursued a business career from 1882 onwards and in 1894 he was admitted as an attorney to the Bars of Pennsylvania. Whilst he gained much material success in his profession as a lawyer, the stress and over-strain eventually took
it's toll, and during this time he experienced a complete physical and mental breakdown, and financial disaster. He looked for healing and in the late 1880's he found it with New Thought. From
a mental and physical wreck and financial ruin, he worked through its
principles to find perfect health, mental
vigour and material prosperity.
Some time after his healing, Atkinson began to write some articles on the Truths which he had discovered which
were then known as
Mental Science, and in 1889 an article by him entitled
"A Mental Science Catechism," appeared in Charles Fillmore's new periodical, Modern Thought.
By the early 1890's Chicago had become a major centre for New Thought, mainly through the work of Emma Curtis Hopkins, and Atkinson decided to move there.
He became an active promoter of the movement as an editor and author. In 1900 he worked as an associate editor of
Suggestion, a New Thought journal, and wrote his first book,
Thought-Force in Business and Everyday Life, being a series of lessons in personal magnetism, psychic influence, thought-force, concentration, will-power & practical Mental Science.
He then met Sydney Flower, a well-known New Thought publisher and businessman, and teamed up with him. In
December
1901 he assumed editorship of Flower's popular
New Thought magazine, a post which he held until 1905. During these years he built for himself an enduring place in the hearts of its readers. Article after article of wonderful strength and vital force flowed from his pen. Meanwhile, he also founded his own
Psychic Club and the so-called "Atkinson School of Mental
Science". Both were located in the same building as Flower's Psychic Research Company and New Thought Publishing Company.
While performing his New Thought editorship, Atkinson became interested in Hinduism, and met up with
Baba Bharata, a pupil of the late Yogi
Ramacharaka, who had become acquainted with Atkinson's writings. They both shared similar ideas, and the men collaborated, and with Bharata providing the material and Atkinson the writing talent, they wrote a series of books
which they attributed to Yogi Ramacharaka as a measure of their respect. Atkinson started writing these books under the name Yogi Ramacharaka in 1903.
He wrote about 13 books under this pseudonym. They were published by the Yogi Publication Society in Chicago and reached more people than his New Thought works did.
In fact, all his books on yoga are still in print today. The very fact that after all these years
these books are well known around the world and sell better with every passing year is a
credit to the two men who wrote them.
Atkinson wrote a great many books on New Thought as well, which became very popular and influential among New Thought devotees and practitioners and achieved wide circulation. In 1903, he was admitted to the Bars of Illinois, which means
he continued his legal work. If we assume he practised
what he preached, that must have helped him to strengthen his nervous system. Beginning
in 1916 he started writing articles for
Elizabeth Towne's magazine The Nautilis, and from 1916 to 1919 he edited the journal Advanced Thought, and was, for a time, honorary president of the International New Thought Alliance.
He wrote nearly a hundred books under many other
pseudonyms: Theodore Sheldon, Theron Q.Dumont, Swami Panchadasi, The Three Initiates, Magus Incognitus and probably others not identified at present. He wrote books together with
Eduard E. Beals and Laurion William De Laurence. He wrote a series
called
The Arcane Teachings, published by Arcane Books Co.,
in six volumes, without signature. Among these books we can identify and
can prove his authority in Arcane Formula or Mental
Alchemy; The Cosmic Laws; and Vril, or Vital
Magnetism.
William Walker Atkinson died on November 22, 1932, in California
- one of the truly greats of The New Thought Movement.
Thought
Vibration OR Law Of Attraction In The Thought World
Without
doubt, one of my favourite William Atkinson books is
Thought Vibration OR Law Of Attraction In The Thought
World. You will find the first chapter of this fascinating
book featured on Tina's
Free Your Thought Vibrations Video page.
Actually, this is one of my
favourite books written on the subject of the law of
attraction.
William Walker Atkinson is one of the names most commonly associated with the law of attraction.
His book Thought Vibration or Law of Attraction in the Thought World (1906)
saw phenomenal success. This book centres on the law of attraction and discusses at
length the different ways in which it can change our lives for
the better.
He states in his book that we are all guided by universal laws and each of our actions is regulated by
them. These laws also influence our thoughts which, like atoms, give best results when held together. It
also explains that our thoughts are in a mode of spiritual union. Thought which is seen as a force by the law of attraction is capable of influencing action. The book illustrates that just as thoughts of love for a person receives a reciprocal response from a person with a similar line of thought, similarly, positive thoughts about the end
goal attract thoughts relating to its accomplishment.
William Atkinson, while writing about the law of attraction, states that the human mind is often affected by thoughts of failure. This often leads to restlessness and deflection from the path of progress.
He states that law of attraction helps the mind in maintaining a mental calm and a state of steadiness in the face of adversity. He illustrates the point through the example of pouring oil from a vessel into troubled sea.
He suggests that the followers of the law of attraction should refrain from negative thoughts and actions. He points out that negative thoughts lead to negative actions and
therefore render us with negative experiences. He also implies negative
utilisation of energy. This, according to William Atkinson, is a wrong application of the law of attraction. Rather, he suggests use of strong thinking and confidence to fend negative energy.
According to William Atkinson, the individual must have faith in himself and in his actions to be successful in his mission.
Transparency between thought and action is very essential. Mere belief and wishful thinking of 'I can' and
therefore 'I will' will only work when it is followed by 'I do'.
William Walker Atkinson's writings on the law of attraction carried the school of thought to a much higher level and even to the next generations.
In 2006, a film named The Secret was made on the basis of his principles.
